I was recently asked to contribute to a blog exploring the question “what does Earth Day mean to me”? I have to admit, this question perplexed me a bit…as the owner of a sustainable lifestyle store, it seems likely that I would have an answer straight away. Instead, I found my self sitting, staring at my computer screen, struggling to put something together.
Fall has well and truly arrived here in NB! The air is crisp and the leaves are vibrant. It’s time for soup and warming drinks. For me, autumn goes hand in hand with settling in, getting cozy, and indulging in some self-care. These themes are definitely consistent in all my fall faves this year.
The cornerstone of Juniper is our refillery, and its purpose is to help us reduce our consumption of single-use plastics. In the refill station, you will find natural cleaning supplies, personal care products, and zero/low waste swaps, all intended to help us reduce the amount of waste typically produced by these products.
Think for a moment of your grandmother, or someone in your life who represents love and warmth and times gone by. In my mind’s eye, I see both my grandmothers sitting in their glider rocking chairs, in their respective kitchens. One kitchen had pink walls and smelled of brown bread, the other a basket of knitting and a collection of salt & pepper shakers along the cupboard tops.
So, where did the name “Juniper” come from? Good question. I’m not sure why, but as soon as I began to articulate the idea of a sustainable shop, the name was attached. The very first page in my notebook of scribbled brainstorming has “Juniper” scrawled along the top.
The more I contemplated the idea of this sustainable lifestyle store, the more I recognized the need for just such a place. I figured, I’m certainly not the only one who wants to do more for the environment. When asked, most folks want to protect our natural resources, if not for themselves, than for future generations.
The concept of Juniper first began to take shape last spring. At the time, I was on a long overdue soul searching journey, reflecting on the aspects of my life that were causing discontentment. Namely, both my career path and my lifestyle habits were contributing to an overall feeling of directionless dissatisfaction. Having come to grips with this discontent, I figured I should get on with it and make some changes. After all, if I didn’t, nobody else would for me. Sounds straightforward, but this reflection and resolve were months in the making, always taking a backseat to the day-to-day grind.
Now that March has arrived, spring is just around the corner. I know we will have a few more cold snaps (like the last couple of days!) and in all likelihood more snow. I am trying not to get ahead of myself in my readiness for warmer weather, but it can be difficult to appreciate winter when we are at the tail end of it. Winter for me typically involves more time spent at home (especially during an ongoing pandemic), and it’s easy to go a bit stir-crazy. This year, in these final winter weeks, I am making a conscious effort to embrace the comforts of home.
